Back to School

So glad to be back to school! We've got a lot going on already.

Kindergartners have been learning their musical opposites. Here's a fun video we like to sing and dance to! Debbie and Friends Opposites

1st graders have been continuing our study of the instruments of the orchestra. We listened to "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and you should see our colorful orchestra pages coming home in the next week.

2nd graders are making their very own music journals! These are full of activities and assessments for the concepts we work on. They'll take them home at the end of the year!

3rd graders are already preparing for our first music program. More info is on the side bar to the left. They're excited to tell you the story of some creatures who were feeling left out.

4th graders have started the much-anticipated recorder unit! In a couple weeks they'll be allowed to take them home to practice if they want to. I'll be sending home more tips but check the info on the left for more resources.

Lastly - I'll be gone on Thursday October 9th for Parent Teacher Conferences. If you want to meet with me please call the secretaries and we can set up a time. I will be available on October 8th at Lecompton Elementary.

Here's to a great year!

Dinomotion!

The 2nd graders rocked their music program Wednesday night! We held the show at the Lecompton Pride Building. We were so grateful to be able to use such a nice space. The Lecompton Pride members were so hopeful in making the night special for the students.

Here are some pictures and if you'd like a DVD of the show, just send a blank one to school.

March is...

Music in Our Schools Month!

3rd graders wrote and drew about their love of music

Oragami pianos from Mrs. Byer's class

Also in March we celebrate Read Across America Week. In music we read the story of The Sneetches. To help us remember to celebrate our differences we made unique stars in 2nd and 3rd grade.

A Kansas Alphabet

This time of year, three important days always land near each other: MLK Jr Day, 100th Day of School and Kansas Day. This can make for a fun and busy time in an elementary school!

The first graders performed "S is for Sunflower: A Kansas Alphabet" on January 29th, the 153rd birthday of our state.

We started right after winter break so these kids have been in "program mode" for a couple months! They worked hard to learn the songs and prepare speaking parts.
We hope  enjoyed it as much as we did! Here are some pictures and a clip of the last song!

Mrs. Shaw entertains them before we go on!

The stage is set!

In action!

Let's Go Fly a Kite

As some of you may have heard, second graders did a unit on Mary Poppins earlier this year. It was so popular one boy named his new hamster after the leading lady! Our wrap up activity was a composition project that was no easy feat.

Students composed rhythms in 3/4 time - a new time signature for us! They posted them on a unique and colorful creation. We sure had fun singing and flying these! Take a look -
